Betwixt and Between: The Art Mother's Make

  • Purple Noon Gallery 606 Terrace Road Freemans Reach, NSW, 2756 Australia (map)

This is an exhibition of 5 female artists who find themselves betwixt and between the demands of the early years of motherhood, and the demands of a dedicated art practice.

Each artist’s practice is shaped by the common experience of painting in the stolen moments between the routines of parenting, day jobs and other commitments. Upon embracing motherhood, each artist has had to find a new way to continue a dedicated practice.

With better childcare support systems in place and fathers who are more actively involved in caring for children, artists are more open to having kids. Raising a family and making art can, in fact, become one seamless activity.

While parenting does, of course, create logistical obstacles to navigate, motherhood does not change the identity or curtail artists’ ambitions—it often reinforces it.
